How to check a crypto address before you send

Unlike a bank transfer, a crypto transaction cannot be cancelled. A few seconds of checking before you send avoid almost every loss.

Why it matters so much

An address is a long string of characters. If you send to a wrong address, or on a wrong network, nobody can cancel the transaction: only the support team can look into the case, with no guarantee of recovering the funds.

The checks to make

  1. Copy the address from your wallet or platform with the “copy” button rather than retyping it.
  2. Paste it and compare the start and the end with the original: both ends must be identical.
  3. Check the network: it must be the one of the address (TRC20, ERC20, BEP20…). Addresses starting with 0x exist on several networks.
  4. Check the crypto: do not send Bitcoin to a USDT address, or the other way round.
  5. For a first transfer to a new address, send a small test amount first.

Common address formats

  • Bitcoin: starts with 1, 3 or bc1.
  • USDT TRC20 (Tron): usually starts with T.
  • USDT ERC20 (Ethereum) and BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain): start with 0x, with exactly the same format.

Warning signs

  • An address received in a private message “to verify your account”: do not use it.
  • An address different from the one shown in your PayFaye app when you send: stop and contact support.
  • Malware can replace a copied address: always compare the pasted address with the original.

In PayFaye

When you buy, you paste your wallet address: the app checks it before sending (format, network) and warns you if it looks wrong. You can save your addresses in your address book so you do not retype them. When you sell, only use the deposit address shown in the app.
